Setting up Room
This page covers installing Room on each device, what to check before you measure, and what to send us when something goes wrong.
What you need
- A Mac on macOS 13 or later.
- An iPhone or iPad Pro with LiDAR: iPhone 12 Pro or any later Pro model, or an iPad Pro with LiDAR.
- An Apple TV 4K on tvOS 17 or later, connected by HDMI to your AV receiver or audio interface.
- All three devices on the same network.
- A track you know well, as a file on your Mac. Room can't measure with a streaming service.
Install
Room is in App Review. One purchase covers Room for Mac, Room Scan and Room View. We'll add the App Store link here as soon as Apple approves it. If you tested Room earlier, we'll email you a code.
- Room for Mac, from the Mac App Store. When it first opens, macOS asks whether Room can find devices on your local network. Click Allow. If your firewall asks about incoming connections, allow them too. The iPhone and Apple TV reach the Mac over those connections.
- Room Scan for iPhone and iPad, from the App Store. Allow camera, microphone and local network access when it asks.
- Room View, from the App Store on the Apple TV itself.
Before you start
- Open Room on the Mac first. The iPhone and Apple TV find the Mac on their own. The Apple TV's top bar shows a blue square beside Mac or iPhone when that device is connected. A red square means the device isn't connected.
- When you send results, include the receiver's sound mode and whether Audyssey, Dirac or the receiver's own correction is on.
- Set a normal listening level and leave it there for the whole measurement.
- Room offers 2.0, 2.1, 3.1, 5.1 and 7.1. If your system has height speakers or a second sub, pick the closest layout. A 5.2.4 system, for example, measures as 5.1. Room doesn't measure height speakers or a second sub yet.
What to send us
- Anything that breaks or confuses you. On the Mac, click the warning triangle at the top right of Room. Your mail app opens with the version, the devices and the recent log already filled in. Add what happened and send the email. On the iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, a screenshot or a photo in an email is fine.
- Your room. Tell us the layout (5.1, 7.1 and so on), the receiver, the speakers and roughly how big the room is.
- A tape measure reading, if you have one. Measure the distance between your left and right fronts, and from your seat to the center, and compare them with what Room shows.
- A capture, if we ask. On the Mac, choose Go › Go to Folder in the Finder and enter
~/Library/Containers/com.symbialabs.room/Data/Library/Application Support/com.symbialabs.room/captures. Each measurement is a folder of photos and recordings of your room, so send a folder only if you're comfortable sharing it.
Known limits
- The iPhone or iPad mic isn't a measurement mic, so Room shows each response relative to the others.
- Room is at version 0.1. So far we've measured only one room. Tell us when something doesn't match what you hear.
